چکیده

The objective of this research program is to develop microwave scattering techniques for obtaining quantitative information about the characteristic dimensions of surface cracks in metals. Work carried out during the past year has emphasized experimental techniques. The use of an IF bridge and a nearfield dielectric probe to improve the sensitivity of our 100-GHz eddy-current measurement system is described. The results of measurements made on fatigue cracks in 2024-T3 aluminum using this ;~proved system also are presented. The interpretation of these data to provide information about crack depth is explained in terms of a simple model. Finally, a theoretical approach for modeling the scattering from elliptically shaped cracks is outlined.

Fusion of Multimodal Nde Data for Improved Corrosion Detection

Corrosion is a significant maintenance problem, especially for aging aircrafts, with the Air Force recently estimating corrosion maintenance costs exceeding $800M per year. Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques can be used to detect corrosion under paint and hidden within layered structures. However, it is difficult to capture a comprehensive picture of the corrosion environment using any ...

Effective Nondestructive Imaging of Defects in Engineering Components

Imaging of defects in engineering components is gaining importance and wider acceptability. Imaging enables automation of measurement process by the use of sensor, enhanced detection and characterisation of defects. Further, it helps in assessing incremental damage in a critical region by performing periodic imaging and comparing. Raster-scan based single sensor imaging and line-scan based arra...

New Methods of Detection and Characterization of Surface Flaws

A new approach to microwave eddy current testing for surface cracks in metals involves the use of ferromagnetic resonance in a small garnet crystal placed close to the surface to be tested. It is well known in this case that the induced eddy currents on the metal surface cause a strong displacement of the ferromagnetic resonance frequency. The presence of a crack on the surface produces, by dis...

Microwave NDE of Ceramics

The objective of this work is to evaluate the potential of microwave techniques for detecting, classifying, and determining the dimensions of inclusions and surface cracks in structural ceramics such as Si3N4. Experimental results that show the feasibility of detecting various types of inclusions and voids in Si3N4 have been obtained, and these results are reviewed. In addition, the question of...

The use of a SQUID for quantitative magnetic field measurements in the nanoTesla region for eddy current NDE

In this paper the use of a HTS SQUID magnetometer for quantitative measurements in eddy current NDE is presented. The SQUID is used in absolute rather than in gradiometric mode and the magnetic field measurements are directly compared to theoretical results. The measurements are taken in an ambient noise environment and the excitation has the form of a double-rectangle Printed Circuit Board coi...
